          1. This completely misses the point of a CoC. It doesn't assume anything about the attendees, but it does make it clear what acceptable behaviour is at that event or in that community. Vague statements like "behave like adults" and "don't be a dick" just make it unclear. j9t/1205550428244660224

          Making it clear what is considered acceptable/unacceptable actually helps people decide to come to your event/join your community. As an organiser/leader, you have a responsibility to your attendees/community members.

        "Behave like adults" assumes that there's one way to behave like an adult. The US President thinks that it's acceptable to sexually assault women. The British Prime Minister thinks that it's acceptable to make racist, xenophobic and homophobic remarks.

      So under the guise of "behave like adults" someone could deem this acceptable. Except it isn't.

    Being clear means that there's no wiggle room. Being clear makes it plainly obvious what is and isn't acceptable. Being clear doesn't treat people like children, it merely gives them the information that they need to make an informed decision and behave appropriately.
