          1. I think Microsoft buying GitHub is a good thing. One way or another GitHub's VCs were going to push for an exit and Microsoft under Nadella has shown it's commitment to open source projects and open source communities.

          To bring up Microsoft's actions under Ballmer and Gates as an instance of how they're going to mess up GitHub means that you're discounting all of the hard work that people have put in to change the track that Microsoft is on. A difficult task with a company that size.

        Microsoft know that they can't mess this up. Doing so would destroy all the goodwill they've worked to build.

      The plan that they've outlined where GitHub is run independently with the same product philosophy is fantastic. Nat Friedman has roots in open source, and seems to have a great enthusiasm for the task of running GitHub.

    If anything, I hope that this acquisition will help GitHub grow up a little and shake off the cultural issues it has.

      I'm excited, Microsoft have brought out some great tools in the past few years and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can bring to GitHub.
